Redaction Pad
Paste text and get it back with emails, phone numbers, card numbers, keys and your own terms blanked out. Runs in your browser.
Remove email addresses, phone numbers, credit and debit card numbers, IBANs, IP addresses, links and API keys from logs, emails or chat transcripts before you paste them into a ticket, a forum or an AI assistant. Replace them with labels like [EMAIL], numbered labels like [EMAIL-1] that keep values apart, or solid blocks.
Card numbers must pass the Luhn check and IBANs their mod-97 checksum. API keys are found by known prefixes (such as sk_, ghp_, AKIA, xox) and JWT shape. There are no detectors for names or national ID numbers; add those as custom terms.
Nothing you paste is uploaded or saved.
Your terms are not saved.
Automatic detection can miss things, especially names and addresses. Check the text before you share it.
How to use the Redaction Pad
- Paste the text into the box. The redacted version appears on the right as you type.
- Tick the kinds of data to find. Dates and long numbers are off by default because they match a lot.
- Add names, companies or ID numbers under Custom terms, one per line.
- Pick a replacement style, tick Show where to see what was found, read the result, then press Copy or Download.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text I paste sent anywhere?
No. Detection and replacement run entirely in your browser. The text and your custom terms are not uploaded, not put in the address bar and not saved. Only which detectors are ticked and the replacement style are remembered on this device.
Can I trust the output to be fully anonymised?
No. The detectors find things with a clear shape, such as email addresses, card numbers and IP addresses. Names, street addresses and free-text details have no fixed shape and are easily missed. Add names you know about as custom terms and read the output before you share it.
What is the numbered style for?
Numbered labels such as [EMAIL-1] and [EMAIL-2] keep different values apart, and the same value always gets the same number. That keeps a redacted log or email thread readable, for example when you paste it into an AI assistant and still want it to tell the two people apart.
Why are dates and long numbers off by default?
They match far more than personal data: order numbers, versions, timestamps and amounts. Tick them when your text has dates of birth or account numbers to remove.
How do I remove names or national ID numbers?
Put each name, company or ID number on its own line under Custom terms. Terms match whole words and ignore case, and are replaced with [REDACTED]. There are no automatic detectors for names or national ID numbers.
Fun facts about redaction
- Blacking out text in a PDF by drawing a box over it leaves the words underneath; several court filings have been "unredacted" by simply copying the text.
- The last digit of a card number is a Luhn check digit, designed in 1954 to catch mistyped numbers, which also lets a redactor tell card numbers from other 16-digit numbers.
- The IP ranges 192.0.2.0/24 and 2001:db8::/32 are reserved for documentation, so examples that use them can never point at a real machine.
- Phone numbers starting 555-01 are set aside in North America for fiction and examples.
